Fundamentals

In this section we will go over some fundamentals to start off with to aid you in learning how to fix your shot. Nowadays everybody wants to get on the court and go straight to the 3 point line and jack up deep threes. And while, yes that’s fun you have to get the basics first before you can do that. Even Steph Curry, the greatest shooter ever warms up by starting inside the key.

Some drills you should start with every time you get on a basketball court is “form shots”. With these you will shoot from the 2 blocks in the paint and right in front of the basket. You should make 10 in a row from each spot all net. If it touches the rim you can’t move on to the next one.

Form Tips

For your form we don’t want to change it too drastically all at once, but a good rule of thumb is for your shot to not have too many extra movements in it. Some examples would be swinging the ball across your body before you shoot it or bringing it behind your head. But if your shot is already like this and your consistent then I would just let it be. Generally, you also want your elbow lined up with the rim and to not use too much of your guide hand. Most importantly you want a jumpshot that you can replicate every single time you shoot, and that’s because if you can do it the same way every time that has a better chance of you being consistent.
