Confidence

The single most important thing when it comes to shooting is Confidence! Just how confidence is important in everything else you do it does not change with basketball. You can watch all the YouTube videos in the world, practice for hours on in, but if you don’t truly have the self confidence that every shot you shoot has a chance to go in it won’t matter. A very popular example of this is Ben Simmons. He’s 6’10, was an all star and a young star in the league. But that still didn’t give him the confidence to trust his shot and shoot it. Even with all the hours he probably practices training, if you don’t believe when you get in a real game it’s not going to matter.

Good news is that confidence issues can be fixed. Gaining confidence isn’t a one shoe fits all though, some people might naturally have more confidence that others. Low confidence in your shot comes from you not truly believing you’re a good shooter. Some ways to fix this is by putting in the work by yourself and showing yourself that you can do this. But the key to working out by yourself is to simulate game like scenarios. You shouldn’t just be spotting up and taking three seconds to shoot the ball. That’s not realistic in a real game. Have another person pass you the ball and pretend you’re coming off a screen and getting the ball up quick. Once you feel you are confident in your shot you need to play competition! You should be looking for somewhat of a challenge, it shouldn’t be easy. This will help you build confidence in real game scenarios and when the pressure is on. It will also teach you how quick you need to get your shot off in regulated games. Over time you will get the type of confidence where even if you missed the last 20 shots in a row you still don’t hesitate. That’s how you know you’re ready. Now when it’s time for regulated games it will be easy. Best of luck on learning how to fix your shot!
